So next week from Tuesday night to Sunday night I am planning a road trip that will be a minimum of about 1700 miles just for the round trip. However, I will also be driving a ton on the Dragon and other fun roads in the area so that number will easily add up over 2000. Anyways, just curious what sort of maintenance you guys do before a long road trip.
This coming weekend I just planned to change my oil+filter, air filter, new wiper blades, clutch hydraulic fluid, and just a visual inspection of hoses/belts/etc to make sure all that is good to go. My Miata has been generally reliable and pretty much every component of my cooling system is newish. New tires as well so that will be good. Only other thing I can think of is my TB/WP coming up in like 20k miles but I still surely have time for that.

I think you've probably got it covered. Any maintenance intervals you'd be hitting during the trip will be best taken care care of before you go, as well as any non-interval maintenance problems you may have been putting off. Can't hurt to give the brakes a bleed, either.

Just gave the brakes a good bleed on Thursday (I guess technically Friday since it was pushing past midnight) while changing a caliper last minute before an autocross. So those are good to go! I could probably use to grease up the calipers though so that they stay quiet.

Jim, is that you? Because that’s your miata.

Who is Jim haha? I just googled a random image of a Miata at TOTD. Small world I guess!

If you pass through the Washington & Jefferson National Forests, give them my regards - that was the route I took bringing back my S2000 from North Carolina.

What roads go through there? I planned to stay East of 81 for the most part. If I recall those areas are to the West. Good hiking out that way but didn’t know of roads through there.

Here’s the route I took:

It was the best compromise of cool road, sort-of on the way home.

Oh sweet, I should be able to squeeze that into my return trip. I have a monotonous 12 hour drive home so it would be nice to spice it up a little with that. It is only a short detour off of 81 anyways.

I did it right after sunrise and there was a lot of fog on top of the hill which was burning off by the time I came down again. I was terrified of the wet, as it was my first time driving the AP1... so YMMV

I had the same experience down near Asheville.
Certainly less scary in a Miata though lol.

Add a couple of extra pounds of air pressure to the tires, Rain-Ex the windscreen, get Waze (or equivalent) on a smartphone with charger, toss the emergency kit and some adult wipes into the trunk and go.

Ahh yes, rain-x! I need to order another bottle of the good stuff. I just ran out a couple weeks ago. That will make a huge difference. Plus I gotta bring some windex along with me. I recall how dirty my windshield got the last time I went on a trip this long.

Brake pads and brake fluid. Inspect tires to ensure you aren’t going to wear anything down to the the chords. Good idea to check spark plugs and maybe a fuel filter if you don’t recall the last time it’s been replaced.

Tires are new so those are good. Pads are still good and fluid is new. Hadnt thought of the fuel filter though so I will look into that. I recall changing the one on my Honda and getting fuel all over the place. So I will do this one better lol.

Do it on a near-empty tank and, before removing the fuel filter, remove the fuse to the fuel pump and start the motor to drain as much fuel out of the lines as possible. The engine should try to crank over a few times before it runs out of fuel.
